Happy New Year everyone! I hope that 2017 is a better year than 2016. I wish you all good luck, happiness, and wonderful new opportunities!

I didn't make any resolutions this year, but one thing I'd like to work on is taking more pictures of my collection. And, if any opportunities present themselves, use my collection to teach others about animals in an interactive and fun way.

Do you have any new years resolutions or just goals for the new year? Feel free to share them!

So it's been a long time since I just kinda typed about a topic. Tonight though a comment over on Facebook grabbed my attention and got me thinking.

As you can probably guess, the topic is trophy hunting. But I specifically just want to focus on one part of the controversy: the "food waste".

First off, is food waste even an issue?
For the most part that I've heard of, it's not. Now naturally I could be wrong, and it would be stupid to say that waste doesn't happen. However here in the US in some states it's actually illegal to waste any part of a kill (I mean, besides parts you can't make use of, like some organs that are inedible). And wanting a nice big rack or new taxidermy piece on your wall doesn't mean you don't also want meat in your freezer. Some hunters even consider people to "not be a real hunter" if they don't eat their kills. More often than not hunters eat what they shoot whether or not they are sustenance hunters. Some also will donate their unwanted meat to food shelters. Honestly I'd bet there would be even less waste if it was legal to sell wild game meat, but that goes against the spirit of how our conservation works.

In the meantime, when we think of those big game African hunts (which I'd say most people think of for trophy hunting), the majority or even all of the meat from the kills gets donated to local communities most of the time. It's hard to just go shoot an elephant and let it sit there to rot. Yes, this even happens with predators (on that note, yes, in the US people eat predators and "vermin" too...you can actually find interesting recipes out there online if you look around). For these safari hunts that can be a really big deal, since it saves substance hunters in the area from having to go out themselves. Some hunters will even pay for part of their hunt with meat, and for a hunt that can cost tens of thousands of dollars I'd say that's a pretty sweet deal on their end and definitely has incentive.

Finding statistics on food waste in trophy hunting is pretty much impossible because this isn't exactly something that's reported on. I'm disappointed by the lack of study, to say the least. All we can really go off of is "he said, she said" and laws in certain areas (which also assumes people are keeping to the law in their area). I can't provide hard data or statistics. However we can look at common sense, laws, and what's even advertised by those who support trophy hunting and see that food waste isn't always or maybe even often an issue or in some places even allowed. If anyone has any good sources, hit me up!

So now that we've covered a very basic aspect, I'd like to move on to my next point: is all waste bad?
This may sound like a stupid question, but let's unpack it a bit. Now of course being wasteful is never seen as a good thing. But if a hunter shoots and animal and leaves the carcass behind after taking the antlers or horn or tusks or skull or pelt or whatever, what happens? Many people will say "it's left to waste and rot". But is it really just "waste" like the rest of our garbage?

In nature one important role predators have in an ecosystem is leaving behind kills for scavengers. By their very nature scavengers greatly depend on it, especially in tough times like winter (which just so happens to be prime pelting season!). It's why we see beautiful relationships in nature between species such as the one between ravens and wolves. When that wolf makes a kill you can bet those birds are sitting on the sidelines waiting to dive in once the wolves have eaten their fill. And they're far from the only ones. Mammals like coyotes or foxes or even bears may pay that carcass a visit, other birds including eagles will usually want their share, rodents love finding bones or antlers, bugs can make a feast out of scraps, and even tiny microorganisms and some fungi will go to town on that kill! Anything that's left may become plant food once it is broken down. The only thing that may take longer to break down is the fur itself if it is not eaten. There's a reason we chock our human corpses full of preservatives before a wake. Maybe an animal is left to "rot", but isn't rotting just nature's way of recycling?

So in reality, what's the difference between a human-killed animal and a wild predator-killed one? There isn't a difference, really. That's why I'll throw the organs from my meat rabbits out into the wildlife area behind my house. I certainly can't eat them, but the local coyotes, ants, beetles, and other teenie tiny critters can. Heck, wouldn't surprise me if the rabbits or squirrels gave it a nibble! Nature knows no waste. Otherwise we would be swimming in carcasses by now. Now I'm not saying we should run around killing animals so we can take specific pieces off of them and chuck the rest into the woods (please don't do that), however for the people that do this I'd like to make the case that they're not being some kind of ultimate evil. While, yes, it is wasteful and in poor taste, it also can give local wildlife a nice meal should they stumble upon it. My only hope is that people who do leave behind perfectly good meat like this leave it in an area that's safe for other animals to scavenge.

I mean, check out this cool time lapse video of a rabbit decomposing. This is without scavenging mammals, this is purely the work of bugs and microorganism, and only for a week:

Finally the last point I'd like to make: why is the only waste we care about trophy hunter waste?
Now my last point entirely focused on the practical side of leaving behind a carcass, but most people don't care about the practicalities so much as the ethical consideration. Sure, maybe if you leave a carcass out in the woods it will return to nature, but why kill an animal in the first place just for a single part of it? It's immoral!

I myself believe this train of thought as well, but at the same time I find it completely ironic. These same keyboard warriors who will chastise trophy hunters because maybe they let the rest of the animal go to waste can turn around the same day and throw out spoiled leftover from their fridge. I loathe food waste like this, yet as I type this I know I have a container of leftover Thanksgiving turkey meat I failed to freeze that's now growing mold and needs to be tossed. And that's after I saved those same scraps from nearly being thrown away on Thanksgiving itself because the cook didn't think they could pull more meat from the carcass (which they weren't going to make soup or broth with, but instead just toss).

The vast majority of us waste food from time to time. In the US alone food waste is the second largest component of landfills (and the highest source of methane emissions, I might add), and only about 3% of our tossed food gets composted. 30-40% of our food supply is wasted, sometimes for something so trivial as "it doesn't look good enough". From the fields (~7% left behind) to the packaging (up to 75% of some foods gets tossed for "not meeting standards") to grocery stores (an estimated $15 billion, as in with a B, worth of unsold fruits and veggies ALONE get tossed every year in the US) to restaurants and other food service (about 17% of food in diners isn't eaten, and this is with ever-increasing proportion sizes over the last 30 years),and even in our homes (~14-25% of what we buy winds up trashed), we waste a LOT of perfectly good food. Statistics show that we waste 50% more food than we did back in the 70s. This means about 1.3 BILLION TONS of food is thrown out every year IN THE US ALONE. That's terrible!

So if we're going to talk about food waste, obviously it would make more sense to hit closer to home first to focus on a larger and definitely serious issue. If your concern is purely food waste then looking at trophy hunters who waste their kills while turning a blind eye to every-day food waste in society is like focusing on a snowball being thrown at you instead of the avalanche cascading down right behind you.

On that note, two wrongs also don't make a right, and there is nothing wrong with focusing on a smaller issue that can be tackled instead of a larger and more intimidating issue. But at the same time you shouldn't be casting stones if you live in a glass house. Many of us simply don't think about our contribution to food waste while we turn up our noses at what others are doing. It's an easy thing to just kind of ignore. It'd be nice if we worked on changing that.

Anyway, these are just my thoughts on the topic of trophy hunting and food waste. I'd like to conclude by saying I don't support killing an animal unless you make use of every usable part you're able to. To me it's just the respectful thing to do, not to mention practical. And yes, I practice what I preach and have the miscellaneous carcasses and other parts in my freezer from my meat rabbits to prove it. I just think it's interesting to look at things from a different perspective.

Yesterday I went driving on a road that had just a biiiit too much snow on it and long story short my car lost a fight with some tree roots. I am probably looking at a total bumper replacement which I think parts alone will eat up most of my paycheck I'm getting this Friday -_- So I need money for the labor. Preferably enough that I can also afford food for the next two weeks before my next paycheck. Because being an adult is fun.

So....curious....would anyone be interested in buying a horse skull? Nature-cleaned, no bottom jaw, has all of the teeth but some are chipped or cracked. No smell or anything but again, nature cleaned, not perfect. Would that interest anyone? I got a new horse skull with bottom jaw (but no front teeth) so I'm debating on selling my old one. Was thinking $40+shipping, but not solid on the price just now.

Also we just got meat rabbits. Not going to breed until we build a grow out pen and outdoor hutch cover, but once we do I was wondering if anyone would be interested in buying pelts? Would probably be feet and head left in. I don't know how to tan hides, and for taxidermy I feel like it'd be best to leave the head and feet in so someone more competent could skin them. I could do craft pelts (no legs or head) dried though. I dunno what the babies would look like, of course, I haven't bred these rabbits yet. But one is brown, one is Siamese marked, and the other is white with black spotting (the Siamese marked one is the male, other two females). Sooooo....yeaaaaah. Would that also interest anyone?

So, despite it being smoky as heck outside right now, the flies coming in hordes, and my cameras being dead, I finally made this video today:

It's crappy, but I think it gets the point across? I meant to make this months ago (like...January? Maybe last year??). Buuuut...yeah. If you ever get the chance to, I recommend trying it yourself for your own video (JUST BE CAREFUL!!!). Or just share this if you get someone who is still under the impression that skinning animals alive is still a thing.

Side note: it's REALLY awkward to make a video like this when your nearest neighbor's back yard is like 5' away. I swear if anyone was walking by or outside when I filmed this...
